Okay, places aren't exactly what you would call 'stuff', but then neither are gigs, so let's just go with it. I thought I'd include a list of the best places I've visited this year, because, as I said somewhere below, experiences and where you've made them tend to be a million times more significant in your life than your favourite blockbuster movie of the year.
1. My (new) flat
It's the one place I spent more time in than anywhere else this year, so I might as well like it, right? It's right under the roof of a rather unspectacular Viennese block of flats, but it's very well-lit and has got little cows and other quirky things painted on its walls. What makes it truly special though, are its inhabitants, who have become almost like a second family for me over the past couple of months. I love my flatmates and the many, many visitors from all over the world who pop in on a regular basis. Together they create a very distinct kind of dynamic which makes this place seem almost like a utopian microcosm or an ecosystem of its own.
2. The cliffs of Ireland
I was thinking about what I liked best about Ireland, but I couldn't decide on a single place or city, so I simply went for its cliffs. I know there are cliffs in other countries as well, but I didn't see them this year, so Ireland it is. Cliffs have a very special kind of attraction for me. Whenever I encounter an especially majestic one, I could stand there for hours, hypnotized. It's what you might call a 'sublime' experience. Although I'm massively scared of heights, I don't mind cliffs at all. Perhaps because if you fall you only fall into the ocean and the ocean is your friend (in this case, because it's softer than, say, a stone pit).
3. Edinburgh, UK
Is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, hands down. It's also one of the few Scottish cities I've spent some more or less intense time in this year, so it will have to take third place. I'm not sure I have a favourite place there, so I'll just pick the whole city, ditches and all. Interestingly, I always liked Glasgow a bit better; maybe because it's a bit more down-to-earth. Haven't been there this year though....I think.
4. Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Again, I haven't spent enough time there to have a favourite place in this city, but I HAVE noticed that Amsterdam is extremely pretty. There are so many little details included into the overall picture of the city, it makes you notice that the people who live there really try to make it a place worth living in.
5. That park just a mile above the flat, Vienna
It's not actually a proper park with groomed lawns and domesticated flowers in it, it's more like a large nature reserve right in the middle of the city. There's a little lake in the middle of the 'park', surrounded by little hills and wild greenery that you can easily get lost in (and I have, on several occasions, gotten lost there, of course). It's a good place to escape the city for a while and pretend you're somewhere else. Occasionally one or two perverts might jump out from behind a tree or shrub, but I've learned to view them as being part of the wildlife-experience.
